First, I keep seeing the ad for this book on Facebook and I commented that the series ( I bought all 7) was shallow and had no character development. There were gaping plot holes and it read more like a die hard movie than a deep thinking story that it started out to be. The plot completely changes as If someone else started writing it in the middle. This was my honest review. They also banned me from their Facebook page and deleted my review which was deceitful and they’re just trying to sell more books. If you read most of the reviews of this series, you’ll see it’s not that good. Book one is compelling. The other books have you skipping pages because it’s some sort of impossible shoot out every other page. The plot is weak and makes no sense past the first book. I did buy all 7 and read them just to see how it ended and was as disappointed as I thought I would be. If you like the shoot up kind of action books, you’ll probably be entertained. If you’re looking for a good story line with compelling characters, don’t bother.

The Gender Game 2 The Gender Secret (Audible Audio Edition) Bella Forrest Jason Clarke Elizabeth Evans Rebecca Soler Nightlight Books Reviews

I've been pretty indecisive about continuing this series after this book because I'm paying for each one. This book truly sucked and the point could have been arrived at in 1/4 if the text that was actually used. Every time you turned a page something big and dramatic was happening and the characters barely had time to interact with each other which was very annoying to me. I'm going to give this series one more try and read the next one.
Even better than the last!
That last book kept me asking questions and the way it ended was so intense and there were so many questions running through my head. I couldn't wait to dive into this one and was not disappointed in the least.
The Gender Secret starts off exactly where the last one left us. Violet is on the run from Matrus and Patrus with and egg that both sides want. She's crash landed in The Green, a dangerous wooded area where people can't survive for more than a few days. She doesn't have many supplies and the danger of animals and insects is quickly creeping up to her. On top of all of that the world is after her, including someone she came to trust and even love.
I was pleased how the author was able to switch between Violet's and Viggo's POV. They are both strong and unique characters and I especially liked to see what went on inside Viggo's head. I said this in my last review, but it just amazes me how unique the story and characters are. While there are definitely other characters out there who may have similar abilities or traits, Violet and Viggo just feel so fresh and I loved getting to know them. And the story just blows me away. I couldn't put the book down because I wanted to know what was going on, I wanted to see if Viggo would forgive Violet, if she would be able to tell him the truth, if they would make it out of The Green. It's been a while since I've read a book this intense and I enjoyed every moment of it.
My favorite part of this book is that the author isn't trying to get us to pick between the two sides. I think I said this in the other review, but I will say it again, she shows that both sides are cruel and demeaning and unjust. There's actually a quote in here that I'll be looking for on here, but it says, "Cruelty didn't have a gender qualifier behind it - it was an ever unraveling human condition, cast out by pride, power, and indifference - and both nations had their fair share of it."
This has so much truth in it. Both genders can be equally as cruel, it's not a personality trait, it's a habit, and this book just shows how badly there needs to be respect on both sides to live happily. I'm so in love with her story telling and was really pleased that she has not pushed for the reader to feel like one side it better than the other.
I enjoyed every moment of this book and started the next one right away. One of my favorite series so far.
I would rate the 14+. There was some scary stuff in here and should not be reading before falling to sleep. The Green is a scary place, filled with all kinds of creatures that cause some pretty scary things. There's minimal blood, but at one point Violet is bit by a centipede and gets a horrible infection from it. She seizes and Viggo has to cut the wound open and pulls out a sac of centipedes. It's pretty gross. There's also these bugs that are kind of like mosquitos, but are even worse and cause a lot of bleeding. The whole scene is intense and scary, especially I think for young readers.
There's not a whole lot going on between Viggo and Violet, but they both express the feeling of wanting to be with the other, and there are a couple of kissing scenes, but they never go any farther than that.
It was a really fun and enjoyable read and I'm almost halfway done with the next book. I would recommend for anyone who loves Hunger Games, Divergent, The Testing, and Stung.
I must admit that this second installment of the series was a bit more engrossing overall, which led me to once again continue the series. However, unlike the first book, this cliffhanger wasn’t as impressive. I enjoyed the development of relationship between the young protagonist and her unlikely love interest; however, it was still a surface-level connection. I’m going to give the third book in the series a go, simply because the writing was somewhat more intriguing; but, truth be told, my tolerance for this YA series is wearing thin.
The Gender Secret did hold my attention but it ended abruptly and was not a complete book. I don't think a book in a series should end with "read the next book." Each book should be independently complete. Please see The Home for Peculiar Children series as an example of excellence IMHO. Overall, the story was more like a single episode to a weekly television action drama than a legitimate book. In addition, the writing is okay but a bit strange. There are higher level vocabulary words oddly placed throughout the text as if the editor started randomly replacing easier word choices with more challenging ones. I don't know if that makes sense but I have read many, many YA books and the rhythm of the vocabulary struck me as odd😳 I must read on. I don't think the series is a waste of time. It is not Hunger Games or Divergent or even as clever as A Series of Unfortunate Events, but it is not awful. I also thought the "romantic" elements in this book were oddly placed. It is odd, almost perverse, to talk about thoughts of attraction when someone's got worms 🐛 in their leg or red fly bites on their back. Stop It! I think the author did a fairly good job overall. The action and fight scenes are great and provide vivid descriptions for your imagination to play with.
